2007 World Summit AWARDS OF APPRECIATION - PRESS RELEASE

October 10, 2007 

Patrice Barrat is a French filmmaker who works in new media to help bring about positive change on important social issues.  He is president of "Article Z", a multimedia agency based in Paris which created new formats such as daily documentary chronicles. He also developed "Madmundo", an exciting new enterprise of professional journalists looking at globalization from the citizens' perspective. Patrice Barrat has been a journalist for over 30 years, working in radio, print and television. 

Patrice  Barrat was one of six  persons who was honored  at the second annual Awards of Appreciation program for their commitment to bringing  benefit to the world through their work  This program was  part of the ninth annual Images and Voices of Hope World Summit which took place  October 4th through the 7th in the Catskill Mountains in New York.  The theme of this year's event was "Inside- Out: Personal Mission and Social Action."  Over 85 media and arts professionals came together to listen and explore how their own inspirations have the potential to create positive change in the community and beyond. 

Award winning Indian filmmaker Sanjeev Chatterjee  received an Award of Appreciation in the category of film. Sanjeev is Vice Dean at the University of Miami's School of Communications.  He was also recently appointed to be Executive Director of the new Knight Center for International Media at the University of Miami. Sanjeev's latest feature film One Water tells the story of the world's growing water crisis through powerful and unforgettable images. 

Another individual honored for personal mission resulting in community impact was Loung Ung, the author of the book "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers".  This memoir was a national bestseller and has been published in 11 countries. A survivor of one of the bloodiest episodes of the twentieth century, the killing fields of Cambodia, Loung Ung has dedicated the last fifteen years of her life to promoting equality, human rights, and justice in her native land and worldwide. Her award is in the category of books. 

Pura Gomez was a recipient of an Award of Appreciation in the category of broadcast journalism- radio. Pura Gomez is editor of the Spanish National Radio in Valencia, Spain. She has become well known in Spain for her work in broadcasting a message of hope, help, and solidarity with the poor. She cooperates with different NGOs to improve quality of life for the poor through improving education, eradicating hunger, and ending exploitation of children and women. 

Nelly Rubio  received an Award of Appreciation in the category of community relations for her work as Community Relations Director at WFOR-TV, CBS4, Miami. She founded Neighbors 4 Neighbors 15 years ago after Hurricane Andrew devastated parts of Miami. It brought together people in need with others who wanted to help. Fifteen years later,  Neighbors 4 Neighbors continues to respond to the community in a variety of ways. 

Jeanne Travers , a dancer, choreographer, and  Associate Professor of Dance at the University of South Florida ,  was the final awards recipient . Her award is in the category of performing arts. Jean created a chorographic project called  "Visions of Peace".  She is devoted to advancing the ideals of world peace and mutual understanding

between various countries, cultures and religions through education. "Visions of Peace"  premiered in 2005  at the Theatre Dejazet in Paris, France under the patronage of the Mayor of Paris , and the President of the French Red Cross. It has also been presented in North America,   where it has received favorable response. 

The purpose of  Images and Voices of Hope Awards of Appreciation  is to spotlight and showcase stories  in the media and arts which bring benefit to the world . We are seeking people to be nominated who have demonstrated Excellence in Media that illuminates humanity's capacity for greatness, and inspires open-heartedness, dialogue and action. We are now accepting nominations for the next Images and Voices of Hope Awards of Appreciation program which will take place September 25 - 28, 2008.  The deadline for this award is Tuesday, July, 29, 2008.
