Images and Voices of Hope World Summit 2007
Journalists, artists, television and film producers, business thinkers,
advertising executives and others from the US and eight other countries came
together in Haines Falls, New York, for the annual Images and Voices of Hope
World Summit on October 4-7, 2007. The ninth such event in the nine-year
history of Images and Voices of Hope, the Summit offered attendees the
opportunity to engage in dialogue about the impact of media on society and
to consider the ways that those working in the media might use access,
talent and influence to bring about a better world.
Among the
Summit participants were Jon Funabiki, Journalism
Professor, San Francisco State University; Director Rod McGrew;
Michael Skoler, Executive Director at Center for Innovation in Journalism at
American Public Media; Bob Steele, Nelson Poynter Scholar for Journalism
Values at the Poynter Institute; organizational behavior expert David
Cooperrider of Case Western Reserve University; filmmaker Sanjeev Chatterjee
of the Knight Center for International Media at the University of Miami;
Washington DC based investigative journalist, Roberta Baskin; French
journalist and filmmaker Patrice Barrat and Michael Hemingway of Ogilvy and
Mather, creator of the groundbreaking Dove "Real Beauty" advertising
campaign.
Summit
sessions addressed questions of personal mission and social impact,
journalism and community, the capacity of art to effect change, and the
future of advertising. The event culminated in an awards ceremony which
recognized the work of Spanish journalist Pura Gomez Roman; French
filmmaker/journalist Patrice Barrat; Indian filmmaker Sanjeev Chatterjee;
Cuban-American television executive Nelly Rubio; Cambodian- American author
and activist Loung Ung; and choreographer Jeanne Travers.
The
Images and Voices of Hope World Summit took place at Peace Village, a
retreat center operated by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University.
Images and Voices of Hope is convened by the Center for Advances in
Appreciative Inquiry at Case Western Reserve University, the Brahma Kumaris
World Spiritual Organization, and the Visions of a Better World Foundation.
Since the first meeting in New York City in 1999,
there have been over 50 IV of Hope dialogues around the world including
Miami, New York City, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver; Rio de Janeiro,
Santiago, and Sao Paulo; Capetown and Johannesburg; London and Oxford; Tel
Aviv and Kuala Lumpur; Moscow and St. Petersburg.
