Registrations for this year's Summit are coming in from all over the world:
From South Africa, Holland, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica,
Singapore, and of course all parts of the US. We are looking forward to seeing
a range of exciting work and to talking together about the impact of media on
the world.
At IVOH, we have always believed that those who work in the media
not only respond to the events of the world, but through their work, they also
help to create the world. This is why we founded Images & Voices of Hope in
1999: to come together as communities of journalists, artists, and media
professionals to consider the impact of our work - both today, and in the
future.
This year's annual World Summit is all about Engaging Our
Audience: Effecting Change in Ourselves and the World. We chose this
theme because of the current media movements around engagement: citizen
journalists, brand-driven online dialogues with consumers, and high-engagement
arts installations.
Here are some of the highlights of this year's summit.
On
Thursday:
On
Friday:
-
We will kick off the summit on Friday morning with our signature
"Appreciative Inquiry / World Cafe" style conversations on the theme. Here
we get to discuss the meaning of engagement in smaller, more intimate group
settings, exploring how we can effect change in society, and in ourselves
-
Later on Friday, the first of a two day series of Showcase Presentations
will unfold, where you can see some of the best work being done in the media
by your colleagues in the fields of television and print journalism,
advertising and marketing, and the fine and performing arts.
On
Saturday:
-
Saturday opens with a One-on-One interview led by Bob Steele, Ethics
group leader at the Poynter Institute and Visiting Journalism Professor at
DePauw University, probing CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman's
signature feature series: "Everybody Has a Story."
-
Then a ‘Round-the-Room dialogue will follow engaging some of the
country's most distinguished journalists and documentary filmmakers in a
free flowing conversation about effecting change for positive outcomes,
exploring new approaches and techniques. Joining us are journalists Maude
Beelman (Special Projects Editor, Dallas Morning News), Renee Ferguson (WMAQ-TV
Investigative Reporter), Fred de Sam Lazaro (PBS NewsHour
correspondent and founder of the Project for Under-Told Stories), and
Lorie Conway (author and film-maker of "Forgotten Ellis Island").
-
Next, a ‘One-on-One' conversation
with Jon Alpert, award-winning documentary
film-maker and founder of "Downtown Community TV Center" to explore his
insights on the impact of the media in the 21st century. Then a ‘Round-the-Room
dialogue will weave in others to reflect on media's role in effecting global
change.
-
Throughout the conference, Exhibits
of Paintings, Photography, Sculpture and Videos… along with Musical
Performances will punctuate our schedule. And there will also be ample free
time for you to interact and share ideas with each other in a more informal
way.
-
As always, our Awards of
Appreciation, held on Saturday evening will recognize and celebrate some
of the best examples and accomplishments that we've found this year in
engaging the audience in the active process of effecting change.
On
Sunday:
-
A Sunday morning Panel
Discussion with those who employ the internet as their primary means of
information sharing and expression. The session will examine how the Web's
interactivity, and the decision making and creative processes that
engenders, are helping media creators engage audiences.
-
The
rest of the afternoon is free, as we say goodbye to one another and head off
down the mountain... hopefully re-charged with energy, re-armed with a sense
of purpose, and revitalized in our attempt to make our world a better,
safer, and more peaceful place.
The
IVoH World Summit is held at the Peace Village Retreat Center, 125 miles north
of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, which is spectacular in late
September.
In
addition to the scheduled sessions, you will have ample time for personal
reflection, and quiet walks through the more than 300 acres of private wooded
campus that surrounds Peace Village. You may choose to participate in sunrise
meditations, and may also attend morning tai chi classes, if you desire. All
meals are provided, and are vegetarian.
Plan now to be with us for the Summit.
Register online
and we'll hold a room for you. The Summit itself is free of charge. Food and
accommodations are paid for by voluntary contributions. The suggested
contribution is $100 per day per person. As other speakers and events are
confirmed, we will update the web site, www.ivofhope.org.
We look forward to having you with us.
Warmest regards,

Judy Rodgers
