New-Media Training
Among the numerous reasons you attend conferences is to meet like-minded people, folks you might envision remaining in touch with and perhaps even collaborating with down the line. Chatting with French broadcast journalist Patrice Barrat over dinner in Peace Village back in October, however, I had no idea that, only two months later, the two of us would be working together on a project in Alexandria, Egypt.
New Media Centers back to top
Three new U.S. media centers are bringing passion and purpose to the media by nurturing new methods and models for gathering and sharing news and information. The Center for Renaissance Journalism, Knight Center for International Media, and American Public Media's Center for Innovation in Journalism all reach beyond the boundaries of traditional media to reengage the public and tap energies and insights across disciplines. We spoke with the three directors (Jon Funabiki pictured) to learn more about what they hope to accomplish and contribute.
A Summit Perspective back to top
Being an all around artist, I am no stranger to the power of brainstorming and collective exploration of a theme. It has always made sense to me that involving more people in the pursuit of an end goal is truly beneficial. The IV of Hope 2007 world summit was such an experience. The broad view of the four-day gathering is simple: a group of like-minded intellectuals, through the lens of their particular discipline, gave thought and voice to important global issues that affect us all. A closer look reveals much more. The words "transforming," "inspiring," "necessary" come to mind.

Summit 2007

Don't miss this summit! After many years away, David Cooperrider (Professor at Case Western Reserve University and one of the founders of Images and Voices of Hope) will be back with us. He will moderate the Friday panel on "Personal Mission and Social Impact." Someone else you don't want to miss is Bob Steele of the Poynter Institute. The Nelson Poynter Scholar for Journalism Values, he will facilitate the journalism session on Saturday and the general "all media session" that follows.

Arts in Boston

back to top

Though it may be difficult to find, there is a culture flourishing in our country apart from pop culture, and it is finally getting the attention it deserves. In 2005, a new musical ensemble called Juventas formed with a focus primarily on young talent-music composed by those under the age of 35. Based in Boston, Juventas will be performing September 15 in the day-long free artists' consortium, called "UpLifted," that is being co-sponsored by IV of Hope Boston as well as at this year's summit.

Power of Theater

back to top

Truth in Translation is everything contemporary theater should ultimately be, with a challenging story, sterling cast, biting social commentary, and emotional impact. It deals with apartheid. Its central focus is the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) hearings, which opened the wounds as people who committed crimes in the name of apartheid stepped forward and asked to be forgiven by the families of those they tortured or murdered.

Welcome!

Hello to each one of you and welcome to the first issue of the Images & Voices of Hope e-newsletter, an electronic publication we will send out quarterly. It was wonderful to be with so many of you at this year's summit, and for those of you who weren't there, you missed a great time. Jon Funabiki-formerly at the Ford Foundation in the media division and now a professor at San Francisco State University-framed up "little media" for us as a counter to "big media." When some objected to the "little" part of the name, he suggested "passion media."

Nepal with Purpose

back to top

French Canadian journalist Eugenie Francouer always wanted to go to Nepal. She had tried and been denied entrance to the ancient country only two years ago. Synchronicity must have played a role in making her dream a reality when she and Susan Kocsis of Search for Common Ground, both honored with Awards of Appreciation, met at the Images & Voices of Hope world summit last fall.

Summit Video

back to top

Meredith Porte, producer and host of WLRN-TV's ArtStreet, and her editor turned to each other at exactly the same moment and shared a knowing laugh. Without saying a word, they knew. There it was: inspiration. Even when ArtStreet contributing producer/director Richard Fendelman's camera is aimed directly at his subject, his calming presence encourages ingenuousness. That's maybe why they work so well together: intention. Click here to see the IV of Hope world summit video that resulted from their collaboration.
